The deer were regulars to our back yard this winter. Above is a sample of the many pellets they left behind. I usually shovel some of it into the flower gardens. I've read that it shouldn't be put directly into a vegetable garden. You can also expect some weeds to grow from the seeds the deer ate.
I found this yesterday - Maybe bear poop? Can anyone confirm? I also noticed something had pulled one of my bird feeders onto an angle, and the bird seed must have poured out. I usually just use black oil sunflower seed in this feeder, but was out - so used a mixed wild bird seed. I think the corn in it may have attracted the bear, if that's who visited my yard.
You don't see this every day on your deck. Our neighbour's cat Motley had her kittens last night - She couldn't resist the warm blankets on our deck. I had made an overhead covering a week ago to protect the bed from snow. I opened the flap this morning to see which cat was in the bed and Surprise - Kittens! She had 3 orange, 1 white and 1 dark/multi-coloured one.
I went on a walk today - looking for some sticks to support my Morning Glory seedlings. It was such a beautiful day today - 14 degrees Celsius. Most of the snow has melted - again. Thought I'd bring my camera and look for some signs of spring.
This is my new squirrel-proof finch feeder. The one I had last year had to be thrown out - the plastic feed outlets were chewed through. This one looks pretty solid.
On my walk I looked for new shoots or buds, but didn't find any. There was a lot of moss, and very hardy plants that withstood the winter.
The deer have lots of vegetation to chew on in the bush around Whitecourt - I used to live in Manitoba where the winter was harsher and there was no green until spring was in full force.
After returning from my walk - I found spring in the back yard.
On the positive side, the flowers I've started in my house are coming up nicely. The tall ones are Morning Glory - I'll be putting in some sticks for them to climb up shortly.
We had a beautiful first day of spring (the vernal equinox - the day the sun is vertically above the equator).
Most of the snow has melted now - although we might get some more snow in the next few days.
I saw a robin two days ago - the first migrating bird I've seen this spring.
There are more cats in the yard than migrating birds. Our neighbour's cat had kittens last year. This is Boots - one of the kittens. He likes to visit us, so I put a blanket on the deck and he comes for naps quite often. Last night we awoke to loud cat noises and there were three cats on the deck.
